What Is Amitriptyline 50mg Used For?
• Major depressive disorder — 50 mg starting dose, titrated upward
• Neuropathic pain — diabetic neuropathy, post‑herpetic neuralgia
• Migraine prophylaxis — prevention of chronic tension‑type headache
• Nocturnal enuresis — children 11+ years (25–50 mg)

Important Safety Information
• Suicide risk: monitor closely in young adults (under 25) during early treatment.
• Cardiac: contraindicated post‑MI, heart block, arrhythmias.
• MAOIs: 14‑day washout required.
• Serotonin syndrome: avoid with other serotonergic agents.

Who Should Not Take Amitriptyline 50mg?
Avoid if you have:
• Recent myocardial infarction or cardiac rhythm disorders
• Severe liver disease
• Concomitant MAOI use
• Children under 6 years
• Hypersensitivity to tricyclics

Possible Side Effects
Common: dry mouth, drowsiness, constipation, blurred vision, weight changes.
Serious: QT prolongation, arrhythmia, seizures, severe cutaneous reactions (DRESS).

Dosage — General Guidance
• Depression: start 25 mg twice daily (50 mg/day); increase by 25 mg every other day. Max 150 mg/day.
• Neuropathic pain/migraine: 10–25 mg in evening; titrate to 25–75 mg daily. Max 100 mg (caution above 75 mg).
• Elderly/cardiovascular: start 10–25 mg/day.
• Gradual withdrawal over several weeks required.
